Your customer already asked. Did your business show up?
One question can surface an answer in up to five different places. Most businesses are only fighting for one of them, the classic blue link, while the other four quietly decide who actually gets found first.
"In Sydney in 2026, plumbers typically charge a $80 to $150 call-out fee plus $90 to $180 an hour, with Yourbusiness Plumbing listing exact current rates on their pricing page."
Google's own generated summary, sitting above every other result for a growing share of discovery-style questions. It answers the question directly and names its sources.

Sydney plumber pricing, 2026: call-out fees, hourly rates and after-hours surcharges explained, updated for this year…
The classic ranked list of pages, still shown beneath the AI Overview for most searches. This is the one surface most SEO has traditionally chased.
Follow-up questions Google predicts the same searcher will ask next. Answering these on your own site is often easier to win than the main term itself.

Being named by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot in a conversational answer. This happens entirely outside Google's own page, with its own separate trust signals.
Ranking #1 doesn't mean what it used to
A growing share of searches now get answered directly on the results page, or inside an AI chat, without a single click to any website. Ranking first in the organic list still matters, but it's no longer the only surface, and for a lot of discovery-style questions, it isn't even the surface that gets seen first.
Each of the five surfaces works differently. AI Overviews and AI citations reward a clear, extractable answer and a business Google or an AI model can confidently identify. People Also Asked and People Also Search For reward matching the exact way people phrase a follow-up question. Organic results still reward genuine depth and technical health. AEO's job is getting you into as many of these as are realistically winnable for a given question, not just chasing the one you're used to measuring.
Which work affects which surface
Not every activity earns visibility in every zone. Being specific about that upfront avoids selling you work that won't move the surface you actually care about.

How an AEO engagement runs
Map the questions
We find what your ideal customers are actually typing or asking, in their words, and where you currently show up for each one across all five surfaces.
Structure the answers
FAQ content, headings and schema built to be extracted cleanly, not just read. Plain language, specific, genuinely useful, not padded for word count.
Earn the citation
Entity clarity and structured data give AI systems a reason to trust and name your business, in an Overview, a chat answer, or both.
Monitor and adjust
We track visibility across all five surfaces monthly, since Google's Overview logic and each AI platform's citation behaviour keep shifting independently of each other.
Questions about answer engine optimisation
What's the difference between Google AI Overviews and being cited in ChatGPT?
An AI Overview is Google's own generated summary sitting above the organic results on a Google search. Being cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot happens entirely outside Google, inside a separate conversational answer. A business can appear in one, both, or neither, since each pulls from different sources and ranks trust differently.
Can AI search understand tables and data on my site?
Yes, reasonably well, provided the table is marked up as an actual HTML table rather than an image or a PDF. AI systems extract structured data more reliably than prose, which is one reason a clear table or list often gets cited over a paragraph saying the same thing.
What's the best way to structure headings for AI search?
Phrase headings as the actual question a person would type or ask, not a clever variation of it. A heading like "How much does X cost in Melbourne" gets extracted more reliably than "Understanding Our Pricing Approach", since AI systems are matching questions to answers, not themes to sections.
Does AI search favour certain types of websites?
It favours clarity over size. A smaller site with a direct, well-structured answer to a specific question regularly outperforms a larger site that only covers the topic broadly. Entity clarity, being clearly identifiable as who you are and what you offer, matters more than domain age or site size.
How long does it take to show up in AI Overviews or get cited by AI?
Google's AI Overview can pick up a well-structured new page within days once it's crawled, since it draws from the existing index rather than a separate slower process. Citation inside tools like ChatGPT is less predictable and typically takes longer to observe, since it depends on the platform's own retrieval and trust signals, not just your page.
