● AI SEO, GEO & Answer Engine Optimisation

What is the difference between AI search and traditional search?

Traditional search and AI-powered search both aim to help people find useful information, but they present it differently. Traditional search returns a ranked list of webpages, while AI search can generate a direct response that brings together information from multiple sources and links to supporting pages.

Traditional search AI-powered search
Returns ranked links and search features. Generates a summary or conversational answer, usually with source links.
Best for finding a specific website, local business, document or product. Useful for comparing options, planning tasks and exploring more complex questions.
Lets the searcher assess sources directly. Saves time, but the answer still needs to be checked against the cited sources.

How traditional search works

Traditional search is not simply exact keyword matching. Google uses systems that interpret language, relevance and context, then ranks pages using many signals, including the usefulness of the content, links, freshness and location where relevant. The result is typically a set of webpages and search features that the user can explore.

For example, someone searching for “accounting software for tradies in Melbourne” may see software providers, comparison articles, local consultants and review sites. The user chooses which sources to open and evaluate.

How AI search works

Google’s current AI search experiences include AI Overviews and AI Mode. AI Overviews may appear when Google believes a generated overview would be helpful. AI Mode is designed for more detailed questions, comparisons and follow-up questions.

Instead of relying on one search, AI search can break a question into related searches, assess relevant information and produce a synthesised response. For the accounting software example, it may summarise common considerations such as invoicing, job costing, payroll integrations, mobile access and publicly listed pricing, then link to sources for further research.

Microsoft offers a similar experience through Copilot Search in Bing, which provides summarised answers with cited sources.

What is the practical difference?

Traditional search helps people find and assess information. AI search helps people explore, compare and summarise information. They are increasingly used together: AI answers can surface useful links, while search results remain important for verifying claims, comparing providers and taking action.

AI-generated answers can be useful, but they are not guaranteed to be correct or current. This matters when information involves prices, availability, legal requirements, financial decisions or local services. Users should open the cited sources and confirm important details before acting.

What this means for businesses

  • Create genuinely useful pages that answer customer questions clearly and accurately.
  • Keep service areas, pricing guidance, product details and business information current.
  • Use descriptive headings, clear page structure and relevant internal links.
  • Build trust with original expertise, evidence, reviews and accurate claims.
  • Continue following standard SEO best practice; Google does not require special markup or an “AI-only” version of a page for AI search features.
