As of December 2025, a significant majority of Google Search users in Australia – estimated to be over 90% of the approximately 21 million monthly active users – are exposed to Google AI-powered features within search results, primarily through AI Overviews and Search Generative Experience (SGE).
This exposure occurs via several mechanisms. AI Overviews, now a standard feature in many Australian searches, synthesise information from multiple web sources to provide a concise, AI-generated answer at the top of the results page. SGE, currently available to opted-in users, expands on this with conversational AI capabilities. Google’s RankBrain system, implemented since 2015 but continually refined, uses machine learning to better understand search queries and deliver more relevant results; this underpins both AI Overviews and standard search rankings. In December 2025, Google is also integrating AI-powered visual search features, allowing Australians to search using images and receive AI-generated insights. Australian data privacy regulations are addressed through Google’s data processing agreements and user control settings within Google accounts. Google has confirmed plans to further integrate AI into Shopping results in 2026, providing AI-driven product comparisons.
Essentially, Google AI functions by analysing vast datasets and user behaviour to understand search intent and deliver information in increasingly sophisticated and automated ways.
