AI News that Matters – 23 Mar 2026
Most AI news is written for people who already know what’s happening. This isn’t that.
This is five numbers from the last seven days that matter, for Australian business owners, marketers, for anyone who makes money from being found online. I’ll give you the number what it actually means, and what to do about it.
of Australians using AI to help make buying decision. 31% have already acted on recommendation. 27% would buy directly through an AI tool
There’s a version of this story where AI is a research tool people gather information, then come to your website, then decide. That version is already out of date.
The 27% who are open to buying directly through an AI tool aren’t on a research journey. They’re at the end of it. And the AI is making the call.
The question isn’t whether this is coming. It’s already here. The question is whether your brand is in the answer when it happens.
Of Australians are using AI to shop. And they trust it.
Just under half of Australians
have used AI assistants for product searches. Jumps to 66% for under-45s. 61% say they’d trust AI to make recommendations. — PayPal Australia, 2026
PayPal Australia published this month and it should make every brand team stop what they’re doing. The number that matters most isn’t the usage figure.
It’s the 61% who say they would trust AI to make product recommendations for them.
“Trust is the hardest thing to earn in business. Australians are handing it to AI faster than most brands have noticed, and certainly faster than most brands are prepared for.”
78% expect AI shopping tools to become mainstream. The early majority has already arrived. The window to be the brand AI recommends in your category is open right now — and it won’t stay open forever.
Search isn’t dying. You’re optimising for the wrong part of it
growth in total search, combining Google and LLMs. More people are searching more things more often. — Graphite, March 2026
Every week someone writes a piece about AI killing Google. It’s a good headline. It’s also wrong.
What’s changed is where. Google is still enormous. ChatGPT is enormous and growing. Perplexity is eating professional search. Voice is at 47% of all searches.
The businesses losing visibility aren’t losing it because search died. They’re losing it because they’re only playing in one part of a game that now has four or five playing fields.
Traditional SEO and AEO aren’t competing. 74% of AI-cited content also performs well in traditional search. Do both.
Your content has a 14 day expiry date in AI search.
AI models begin deprioritising content without freshness signals. Not 14 months. Not 14 weeks. — GenOptima, Q1 2026
This is the one that gets a silence on the other end of the phone.
Traditional SEO built a world where good content holds its position for months or years. AEO doesn’t work like that. It rewards content that signals it’s alive — version histories, updated dates, new data, refreshed sections.
The moment your content goes static, the clock starts.
The fix isn’t to produce more. It’s to build a refresh cadence into how you publish. Even a small update resets the signal. The businesses winning here aren’t the biggest publishers. They’re the most consistent maintainers.
of qualified B2B leads now come from AI-native platforms. Behind only social media at 46%. Ahead of traditional organic search. — Discovered Labs, 2026
I want to be clear about what “qualified leads” means here. Not impressions. Not awareness. Pipeline-level intent.
The mechanics are concrete. FAQPage JSON-LD schema drives 3.1× higher answer extraction rates — but only when the questions are written the way real people actually talk to ChatGPT.
Not “What is [service]?” keyword headings. The exact phrasing someone types at 10pm when they’re ready to buy.
“Your biggest competitor isn’t the company bidding on your keywords. It’s the AI that answers your prospect’s question without ever mentioning your name.”
One action: take your three most valuable service pages. Write a FAQ section the way a client would ask the question to ChatGPT. Add FAQPage schema. That’s the highest-ROI AEO move available right now, and almost nobody in Australia is doing it properly yet.
That’s the week. Five numbers, all pointing at the same thing: the buying decision is moving into AI systems, the trust is already there, and the businesses that get structured for it now will be very hard to catch in 12 months.
The 10-Second Test That Shows If AI Is Sending You Clients
Open ChatGPT. Type the biggest problem your best clients pay you to solve. If you’re not in the answer, that’s not a ranking problem. That’s an AEO problem and it’s fixable. Reply and I’ll show you exactly where the gap is. Drop your details below and I’ll show you exactly where the gap is.
